Calling all
geeks and nerds! Prepare to be blown away from your seats for the latest
installment of Marvel’s all time infamous groups of super humans, the X – Men.
After the third movie (X-Men: The Last Stand) which have been criticized by
some comic book fans to be a poor adaptation of the X – Men series perhaps this
year’s X – Men: Days of the Future Past will redeem the X - Men movie franchise
and give us another shot of geekgasm!
Days of the Future Past is an original story
from the comic book series of X – Men. The series narrates the tale of our fave
mutants as they try to change a significant event in the past in order to save
their race from the perils of being wipe out in the face of the earth in the
future. This horrifying apocalypse of the mutant race become possible due to
these machines (The Sentinels) that have only one purpose why they are built:
to terminate all mutants whether they are threat or allies. Though it is
inevitable that there are some major to minor difference from the original comic
series, the movie is still remains true with the gist of the whole story of how
Professor X and Co. change the past for a better future between humans and
mutants.
The first
scenes in the movie will quickly display that effect of the Sentinel Program in
post -apocalyptic future as they totally dominate and destroy a small group of
mutants lead by the future Kitty Pryde (Shadow Cat). Later on Kitty and the
gang will meet up with Professor X, Storm and Wolverine (Cyclops and Jean are
no show here for their unexpected and disappointing demise in The Last Stand). Surprisingly, another
addition to the roster of our hero is the friend turn villain turn ally Magneto
(Complexities is the name of the game). In order to stopped the rampage of the
Sentinels, our feral friend Wolverine must go back to the past to stop Mystique
from killing the scientist responsible in building the mutant destroying
machines. Sounds easy? But it will not just take Wolverine’s adamantium claws
to push to its limits (by the way he didn’t still possess his adamantium
skeleton during the movie) but also his patience and his heart to convince the
young Charles X. Xavier and Erik to join him in his seemingly impossible quest.
Quick Silver (Evan Peters) has no doubt stole the scene in the latest X-men installment with his wacky and amazing blinding speed. His role is a must to remember (though its kinda short) |
As expected
in any Marvel based super hero movies are the eye popping visuals and CG
effects that greatly enhanced the explosive action scenes. Among that must see scenes
here is the crazy and humorous trick of Quick Silver to save Wolverine, Magneto
and Professor X from the rain of bullets while everyone is in slow-mo while
“Time in a Bottle” is playing on the back ground! (Everyone in the theatre is
laughing out loud during that part! Epic scene with an epic music is always
equivalent to Classicness!) Other noteworthy scenes is Magneto’s moment where
he rip apart a foot ball stadium and let
it float in the air like a flying fortress while he control all Sentinels that
showers lots of mean bullets in the sky (Death from Above tactics isn’t it?).
No one wonder Magneto can be the scariest villain in the X – Men universe with
his superb tactics combine with metal manipulation powers (kudos to the chess
games he plays with Prof. X). Sad to say, some mutants like Bishop and Blink ( she's so gorgeous by the way with his teleportation slash space bending powers) have a very short and nearly unnoticed role in movie. Majority of their appearance is strictly for action packed scenes when the Sentinel go head hunting the mutants.
Story wise,
the movie I believe are more beefed up than the previous one. More conflicts
make the whole movie interesting as it dig deeper into the history behind the
friendship of Eric, Charles and Raven and how it end up after the story of the
prequel movie X – Men First Class. We can see here a different angle on their
character and how they all bear the suffering imbued in them because of the
Mutant X – Gene. Expect a different side of Magneto as he shows that behind his
steel heart is an enigmatic brother with a deep and zealous love for all his
mutant kin as well as a near hopeless and wasted Charles X. Xavier who lamented
seriously after he loss lots of his love ones ( that includes Raven and Eric in
an emotional aspect). You also have to see what will happen if the future and
the past Prof. X meet and greet one another (expect lots of insightful wisdom
for sure!)
Of course it
is a cliché to say that it all ended up nicely but prepare for a total twist
that will show who will really decide the fate of the mutants before the movie
reach its conclusion.
Days of the
Future Past give us a fantastic ride of thrilling mutant power fest and complex
story that let us have a glimpse that behind those incredible powers they
possess, they are still but humans who bear both the gift and curse of having a
heart and soul and responsibility that in every decision they made will affect
everybody in their past or even in their future.
